Actresses Who Successfully Hid Their Pregnancy While Filming

For most of us, being pregnant means eating buckets of ice cream and binge-watching Gilmore Girls. But, for Hollywood’s most talented actresses, a growing baby bump just means production writers have to get creative. When actresses in the midst of filming get pregnant, production writers have two options: add the pregnancy into the script or attempt to creatively hide it. Here are all the stars who continued filming even while carrying a child.

Lisa Kudrow

Pregnant while filming: Friends

While filming season 4 of the popular sitcom, Lisa Kudrow became pregnant. But, instead of halting the filming process, the production team thought of a unique way to work around the growing belly – write it into the show! The writers created a storyline where Phoebe agreed to become a surrogate for her brother and his wife. This genius twist allowed Kudrow to flaunt her baby bump freely and hilariously while filming.

Melissa Rauch

Pregnant while filming: The Big Bang Theory

Bernadette was pregnant twice on The Big Bang Theory, however, the second time wasn’t part of the plan. When Melissa Rauch became pregnant during season 11, the writers decided to add it into the plot. Thing is, viewers were left scratching their heads as Bernadette just gave birth to her first child nine months prior. Sometimes unplanned plot twists don’t fit as seamlessly…

Rachel Bilson

Pregnant while filming: Hart of Dixie

Back in 2014, Rachel Bilson and her fiancee at the time, Hayden Christensen, announced they were expecting, which left Hart of Dixie fans wondering how the production team would handle the news. Well, they just wrote it in! During the show, Dr. Zoe Hart, who was trying to convince her on-again-off-again love interest that they belonged together, ended up getting pregnant. This plot twist allowed Bilson to flaunt her growing baby bump off and on screen.

Zooey Deschanel

Pregnant while filming: New Girl

During season 5 of New Girl, Zooey Deschanel was carrying quite an obvious baby bump. In order to continue production, writers found creative ways to hide the belly. Throughout the season, Deschanel’s character was hidden behind a jury bench, conveniently injured, forced to lay in bed under blankets, and ‘replaced’ in the loft by Megan Fox.

Alyson Hannigan

Pregnant while filming: How I Met Your Mother

Did you know Alyson Hannigan was pregnant twice while filming How I Met Your Mother? Well, during Hannigan’s first pregnancy, the producers decided to keep it out of the plot and, instead, hide the growing belly. During the second time around, Hannigan’s baby bump was seamlessly written into the plot. Interestingly, the actress and the character gave birth at almost the exact same time!

Blake Lively

Pregnant while filming: The Shallows

Blake Lively was already pregnant with her second daughter, Ines, when she signed on to film The Shallows. Throughout the film, Lively was either sporting a wetsuit or bikini, making it close to impossible to hide her growing belly. According to sources, the beautiful actress was filming in the water at up to five months pregnant!

Scarlett Johansson

Pregnant while filming: Avengers: Age of Ultron

Due to Scarlett Johansson’s pregnancy while filming Avengers: Age of Ultron, the actress needed not one, not two, but three people acting as body doubles! The production team had to work overtime grafting Johansson’s face onto those body doubles during post-production. It must have been close to impossible trying to hide Johannson’s growing baby bump in that tight Black Widow suit.

Gal Gadot

Screenshot: DC Entertainment

Pregnant while filming: Wonder Woman

Gal Gadot wasn’t pregnant during the majority of the production for Wonder Woman, but when certain scenes had to be reshot, Gadot was already six months pregnant. At first, Gadot wanted to keep her pregnancy a secret, but morning sickness and hormone-induced migraines made it impossible. The Wonder Woman star had to film the iconic battle scene with her baby bump!

Ellen Pompeo

Pregnant while filming: Grey’s Anatomy

When it comes to hiding a baby bump, scrubs are the way to go! When Ellen Pompeo was pregnant with her first child, her character, Meredith Grey was already in the process of adopting due to fertility issues. So, it wouldn’t have made sense to add Pompeo’s pregnancy into the plot. Instead, the writers creatively added a twist by having Meredith donate a part of her liver to her estranged father. This allowed the actress to hide her growing belly behind hospital bed blankets.

Sarah Jessica Parker

Screenshot: HBO Original Productions

Pregnant while filming: Sex and the City

That’s right, Sarah Jessica Parker was pregnant while playing an anti-baby Carrie Bradshaw! Throughout season five of the hit show, Carrie Bradshaw was in a rocky relationship with her love interest. The writers didn’t want to complicate things by adding a pregnancy, so they hid it. The wardrobe team tried to hide the growing belly with baggy clothing. Thing is, fans were used to seeing Carrie in tight, fashion-forward outfits, which meant viewers caught on quick.

Candice Accola

Screenshot: Warner Bros. Television

Pregnant while filming: Vampire Diaries

When it comes to supernatural content, producers look for any opportunity to concoct a wild premise. While filming season seven of Vampire Diaries, Candice Accola, who played Caroline, revealed she was pregnant. The show’s producers creatively added this turn-of-events into the script, explaining that the twins Caroline was carrying were magically implanted into her after Alaric’s wife was killed in the altar. While these seemed pretty out there, it allowed Accola to continue filming while pregnant.

Sarah Drew

Screenshot: Shondaland Productions

Pregnant while filming: Grey’s Anatomy

While filming season 11 of Grey’s Anatomy, Sarah Drew revealed to the show’s producers that she was expecting. Interestingly, just 10 hours after giving fake birth on the show, Drew went into labor for real.

Penelope Cruz

Instead of halting the filming process, the production team called up Cruz’s identical sister, Monica, who became the actresses body double. Even the franchises’ biggest fans didn’t notice the difference.

Emily Blunt

Pregnant while filming: Into The Woods

During the film Into The Woods, Emily Blunt’s character wants to but is unable to have children. So, it was imperative for the production team to hide Emily Blunt’s real growing baby bump. The different methods that were used included: putting co-star James Corden in front of Blunt’s character during her scenes and packing on the clothing layers.

Courteney Cox

Pregnant while filming: Friends

While Lisa Kudrow proudly flaunted her growing baby bump off and on screen, co-star, Courteney Cox, was less-lucky. During season 10 of the popular sitcom, Cox became pregnant. Anna Paquin

Pregnant while filming: True Blood

During season five, Anna Paquin became pregnant and unfortunately, it did not fit the plot. Kate Winslet

Pregnant while filming: Divergent

Let’s be honest, while watching Divergent, most of us were strictly focused on Shailene Woodley and Theo James’ on-screen romance. Thanks to lots of black clothing and strategically placed iPads and folders, Winslet’s baby bump was thoroughly concealed.

Jessica Capshaw

Pregnant while filming: Grey’s Anatomy

During Jessica Capshaw’s pregnancy, Shonda Rhimes decided scrubs just weren’t going to cut it. Pregnant while filming: Scandal

During season three of Scandal, the production pulled out all the tricks to try and conceal Kerry Washington’s pregnancy. Marvel Entertainment

Pregnant while filming: X-Men: Days of Future Past
